  • Descrição: A Laya Films documentary produced during the Spanish Civil War on the cork industry in the Baix Empordà area of Catalonia. It includes scenes depicting the traditional manufacturing process, which begins with the stripping of the bark from the cork oak trees, going on to show the cork being transported to the factory on donkeys. There it is hand-worked in various stages right through to the final production of the cork itself. In contrast, complicated modern machinery exists for the manufacturing of corks, although the work done by these machines does not compare to that of the professional craftsmen. The film portrays mechanised industrial cork manufacturing as a process which turns workers into slaves of the mechanical gimlets.
